Prior to writing Article II: Executive Branch, students should have completed "Web Quest: Executive Branch " to better understand the Executive Branch. If you have not done this, please do so now.
Article II establishes the Executive Branch of government, which work hand-in-hand with the Legislative branch. As we previously learned, the Legislative branch is established by Article I of the US Constitution and has the power to create our nation's laws. But if the legislative branch creates laws, who will carry them out? This is where the Executive Branch steps in as it is responsible for carrying out our laws. The head over the Executive Branch is the President of the United States.
In Article II of our High School Constitution, we will design our Executive Branch. First, we need to create Section 1 of Article II. This will deal with the qualification and terms limits of our president. So the first thing we need to do is decide who among our High School is eligible to run for President and Vice President of the Executive Branch. Are students, teachers, and administrators all eligible? Likewise we need to establish certain qualifications. I would guess that not simply anyone can run for President. Might they have to be of a certain age? If so, students might be excluded from such a position. Likewise, we need to establish some terms limits as well, meaning that the President can only hold office for a specified time. All of this will be included in Section 1.
In Section 2, we need to outline powers and duties of the President. In the US Constitution, the president has clearly defined powers and duties. For example, he has the power to appoint Supreme Court Justices, to serve as commander in chief of the armed forces, to pardon criminals for federal offenses, and to make treaties. What powers and duties will the president have?
Finally, in section 3, explain how the president is chosen for office. Is he/she elected? If so, who has the right to vote for the president? Remember there are more students than teachers, which would give students more influence over picking the president. Is this a problem. If so, how might you resolve this problem. All of this needs to be created in section 3
